Red Carpet Fashion: Work it!

Red Carpet fashion; all the glitz and glamour of A-list starlets in a way that works for you.

Sheer fabrics and plunging necklines were a hit this Red Carpet season, but for many of us bearing that much skin is a little too risque and better left to the overtly confident Hollywood veterans. That's not to say if you have had a mastectomy you've got to cover up, if you have the confidence - go for it! But you don't need to reveal all in order to make a statement. Here are a few of About the Girl's favourite 2014 Red Carpet trends and how to make them work for you...

Jenna Coleman attend the 2014 GQ Men of the year awards held at the Royal Opera House on Tuesday.
Even at a ceremony devoted to the world's most influential (and attractive!) men, Miss Coleman perfectly illustrated how you don't have to show cleavage in order to make a statement and looked stunning in her sweet 60s style dress from Saint Laurent's Fall 2014 collection. The high neckline of this style provides ideal coverage and slips perfectly into 2014's hottest trend - the return of the swinging sixties. The shorter length of this style dress, coupled with the showering of tiny gold sequins further reinforces its 'wow' factor.

Lara Stone also showcased this look in a Christopher Kane number. A Little Black Dress adorned with playful molecule inspired motifs with silver faux leather and fuchsia mesh appliques provides both upper body coverage and again illustrates how a shorter length leaves all the talking to the legs! The bold detailing on this number may not be to everyone's taste but it left Ms Stone with a coveted spot on Red Carpet Fashion Award's Best Dressed list.

Chloe Grace Moretz attended the 'If I Stay' New York premiere this August and also opted to stick with the sixties trend in this incredible Miu Miu floral embellished dress shirt classic with Peter Pan collar and the sparkles and fresh pink hue really put a modern spin on this classic style. If you are feeling self conscious around your cleavage, the Peter Pan collar is a fabulous choice!

Classy and elegant are two qualities everyone hopes to emanate. Pippa Middleton has long held her place as a style icon and shows us how to channel red carpet fashion in this delicate blush coloured, paillette-embroidered silk top and matching chiffon skirt by Boss. The modest length and higher neckline are the perfect illustration of a classical elegance, but what we particularly love about this look is that all the emphasis is on Pippa's waist. By adding a waistband to a modest dress you immediately add a zestiness by emphasizing your womanly curves, whilst still retaining upper body coverage.

Meryl Streep made her mark on the red carpet at the Oscars in a similar fashion, choosing a Lanvin slightly off the shoulder number accessorized with a belt to showcase her fabulous figure. It was both glamorous and age appropriate and landed the 18-time nominee a spot on Vogue's Best Dressed list. Off the shoulder can be a worrying idea if you feel uncomfortable exposing upper body flesh, but the way the fabric drapes in this style means it only drops subtly on one side.

Perhaps our favourite 2014 Red Carpet look came from Naomi Watts in her breath taking all white Calvin Klein dress. The piece provided full coverage and from the description of it; higher straight neckline, capped sleeves, full length, all white, you could mistake it for being slightly dull. But this dress is anything but and cast a sultry yet modest silhouette. The key styling tip we picked up here is Naomi's use of accessories. The statement Bulgari necklace breaks up the block colouring and creates a bold yet elegant neckline.

Dame Helen Mirren also chose to accessorize in this way with a very dramatic necklace. The neckline of this dress is a lower cut and the pairing of a straight neckline and full length sleeve leaves a square of bare skin. However, Dame Mirren uses the silver necklace to break up this space and it works wonders.

Everyone is individual and with that comes differing shapes, scars and confidence. But what we can see from just a handful of these Red Carpet looks is that you don't need dresses with thigh high splits worn by Jessie J or plunging necklines by Kate Hudson to make a statement.
